American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) is a native, multi-stemmed shrub found along woodland edges, rocky hillsides, and in brushy fields across the Ridge and Valley. Its early spring catkins and leafy summer growth give way to edible nuts in late summer and fall.

The nuts feed squirrels, chipmunks, jays, turkeys, and other wildlife. Its dense, suckering growth also provides valuable cover and nesting habitat. Plant it along a woodland edge, in a wildlife planting, or as a natural screen.

Water while establishing. It spreads by root suckers and can form a thicket, so allow room to grow. For nut production, plant at least two genetically different American Hazelnuts nearby for cross-pollination.
Ecology & Wildlife
The edible nuts feed squirrels, chipmunks, jays, turkeys, deer, and other wildlife. The leaves support native caterpillars, and its dense growth provides cover and nesting habitat for birds and small mammals.
