Allegheny Chinquapin (Castanea pumila) is a native shrub or small tree found in parts of the Ridge and Valley, especially on dry rocky slopes, open woodlands, ridges and forest edges. A close relative of the American Chestnut, it produces small, sweet, edible nuts enclosed in golden spiny burs that split open in fall. These nuts are a favorite of squirrels, chipmunks, wild turkeys and other wildlife, making Chinquapin an excellent addition to edible landscapes and habitat plantings!

Planting & Care

Plant in full sun to partial shade with dry to medium, well drained soil. Allegheny Chinquapin prefers acidic to neutral soils and grows well in sandy, rocky or relatively poor ground. Avoid heavy, poorly drained clay soils and water regularly while establishing. Once established, it tolerates drought and can grow into a large, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree. Plant at least two genetically different seedlings for better nut production. Although more tolerant of Chestnut Blight than American Chestnut, it can still become infected!

Ecology & Wildlife
Allegheny Chinquapin produces small, sweet nuts that provide food for squirrels, chipmunks, wild turkeys, blue jays, deer and other wildlife. Its summer flowers offer pollen resources for insects, while its foliage supports native caterpillars. Its dense, branching growth also provides valuable cover and shelter for birds and small mammals.
