Allegheny serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis) is a small native tree with clouds of white flowers in early spring, often appearing just before its leaves. Sweet blue black berries follow in early summer, offering food for people and wildlife, and the foliage turns brilliant shades of orange and red in fall. Its graceful form suits woodland edges, open shade, and smaller home landscapes. It is native to the mountains and Piedmont of Maryland and occurs across the Ridge and Valley region of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

It can grow as a multi stemmed shrub or be trained into a small tree by selecting a central leader while young. It is less likely to sucker than Canadian serviceberry.
Ecology & Wildlife
