Flame Azalea (Rhododendron calendulaceum) is a showy deciduous shrub native to Appalachian woodlands, slopes, and mountain balds. In late spring and early summer, its large flower clusters open in shades of yellow, orange, and red. It grows best in acidic, well drained soil with dappled light or partial shade, where it can become a striking woodland garden specimen. The nectar rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

Planting & Care
Plant in acidic, well drained soil rich in organic matter, in dappled light or partial shade. Water regularly while it establishes, and during extended dry spells. A layer of pine bark or leaf mulch helps retain soil moisture. Avoid alkaline soil and poorly drained locations. Prune after flowering only if needed, since next year’s flower buds form by mid to late summer.
Ecology & Wildlife
The nectar rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The eastern tiger swallowtail is a notable pollinator of flame azalea.
