Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) is a small native tree with rosy pink to lavender flowers that open along its bare branches in early spring. Its heart shaped leaves turn yellow in fall, and the tree brings a lovely burst of color to woodland edges, open yards, and pollinator gardens. Native to Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, eastern redbud grows best in moist, well drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Its spring flowers attract bees, and its seeds feed songbirds.

Planting & Care
Choose a permanent planting spot in full sun to partial shade with moist, well drained soil. Eastern redbud grows in loam, clay, or sandy soil, but it does not tolerate standing water or poorly drained ground. Water regularly while young and during dry spells. It develops a deep root system and does not transplant well once established, so plant it where it can mature.
Ecology & Wildlife
The early spring flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators. Redbud also hosts caterpillars, including Henry’s elfin butterfly, and its seeds are eaten by songbirds. extension.umd.edu
