Common serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea), also called downy serviceberry, is a small native tree found in open woods, rocky slopes, and woodland edges across the Appalachian Ridge and Valley. Its white flowers open in early spring, followed by red to purple fruit in early summer. Birds and mammals eat the berries, and the blooms offer an early source of pollen and nectar.
