Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is a native perennial found throughout the Ridge and Valley, especially along streams, wet meadows, seeps and moist woodland edges. Its brilliant red flowers bloom from mid to late summer, providing an important nectar source for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds as they prepare for fall migration. The flowers are also visited by butterflies and other pollinators!

Planting & Care

Plant in full sun to partial shade with consistently moist or wet soil. It's a great choice for rain gardens, pond edges and other areas that stay damp. Water regularly while establishing and avoid letting the soil dry out, especially during hot summer weather. Cardinal Flower can be a short lived perennial, but it readily produces new rosettes and may spread by seed when given the right conditions!
