Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) is a native perennial found throughout the Ridge and Valley, especially in dry fields, shale barrens, rocky slopes and open woodlands. Its bright orange flowers bloom throughout summer, providing nectar for native bees, butterflies and other pollinators. It is also a host plant for Monarch caterpillars!

Planting & Care

Plant in full sun with well drained soil, even rocky or poor soils are fine. Water regularly while establishing but avoid keeping the soil wet. Once established, Butterfly Weed is very drought tolerant and needs little care. Its deep taproot makes transplanting difficult, and don't be surprised if it's one of the last plants to come up in spring!
