Whorled Rosinweed
Whorled Rosinweed (Silphium asteriscus var. trifoliatum) is a native perennial found throughout parts of the Ridge and Valley, especially in open woodlands, dry meadows, rocky slopes and limestone-rich soils. Its bright yellow, sunflower-like flowers bloom from mid to late summer, attracting native bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Its distinctive leaves grow in whorls around the stems, and its mature seeds provide food for goldfinches and other birds!
Planting & Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade with dry to medium, well drained soil. Whorled Rosinweed tolerates clay, gravelly soils and periods of drought once established, making it a great choice for naturalized gardens and sunny meadows. Water regularly while establishing, but avoid keeping the soil constantly wet. Its deep taproot helps it tolerate dry conditions, although it can make established plants difficult to transplant. Give it plenty of room to grow, as mature plants can reach five to six feet tall!
