Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) is a native perennial found throughout the Ridge and Valley, especially in wet meadows, marshes, floodplains and along streams. Its beautiful clusters of pink flowers bloom throughout summer, providing nectar for native bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Like other native milkweeds, it's also a host plant for Monarch caterpillars!

Planting & Care

Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist to wet soil. Swamp Milkweed grows especially well in rain gardens, pond edges and areas with heavier clay soils that hold moisture. Water regularly while establishing and avoid prolonged dry conditions. Unlike Common Milkweed, it grows in relatively tidy clumps rather than spreading aggressively through underground rhizomes. Don't be surprised if it's slow to emerge in spring!
